ACCET Hosts Kosovo’s First Roundtable on AI in Counter-Terrorism and Security

The American Center for Combating Extremism and Terrorism (ACCET) recently hosted Kosovo’s first-ever summit on artificial intelligence’s role in counterterrorism and national security. Dwaine Lee, ACCET’s vice president, emphasized the importance of using AI to combat terrorism while cautioning against its potential misuse by malicious actors.

Kosovo’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, highlighted the country’s efforts to develop strategies against terrorism and cyber threats. He stressed the need for responsible and legal use of technology, acknowledging AI’s power in tracking terrorists and detecting suspicious transactions.

Edward Anderson, Director of the Department for Public Safety and Security at the OSCE Mission to Kosovo, urged prioritizing AI use for critical issues benefiting citizens. He commended Kosovo’s rapid adoption of new technologies while emphasizing the need for strong determination in implementing them effectively.

Scott Bates, former Senior Policy Advisor to the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, emphasized the role of partnerships with the private security in developing policies and strategies. Irfan Saeed, Head of the Anti-Terrorism Unit for the OSCE in Vienna, spoke on the legal and ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI.

Nearly 50 participants joined in open discussion and debate about the role of AI and its potential positive and negative impact. The event was attended by representatives from the EU, UN, Kosovo parliament, Kosovo state prosecutor’s office, the Academy for Justice, Academy for Public Safety, private sector, and other key stakeholders engaged in promoting peace and security within Kosovo.

Rebuilding Communities in Syria

ACCET experts successfully designed and implemented comprehensive programs to facilitate the reintegration of Al-Hol camp returnees in Syria. Our team developed frameworks for Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP), inter-agency cooperation, cybercrime management, National Public Key Infrastructure (NPKI), and capacity building.
